What is a Local Biodiversity Strategy
A Local Biodiversity Strategy is a planning strategy that aims to identify areas of locally significant ecological value and set out pathways to identify and protect the biodiversity in these areas. These areas, known as Local Natural Areas, do not afford protection by State or Federal Government and it is important that the City takes the opportunity to identify Local Natural Areas and develop strategies to conserve a sustainable percentage of the high value biodiversity that remains within the City.
Why its important to have a Local Biodiversity Strategy
The City is one of the fastest developing Local Governments in Western Australia. Rapid urban and industrial growth has meant that much of the City's bushland has now been cleared. The Community repeatedly rates the natural environment as one of its top priorities and this is reflected in the City's Strategic Community Plan 2021-2031.
The Draft Local Biodiversity Strategy has been developed and adopted by Council to ensure that the City assesses, measures and ranks Local Natural Areas for their ecological values, and develops actions to protect and conserve the most valuable bushland in a way that will sustain its vast diversity of flora and fauna for future generations to enjoy.
