The Medina Place Plan is a guide for working together to create the best Medina possible.

In developing The Plan, we asked the Medina Community four important questions:

  • What do you love about Medina?
  • What things would you do to improve Medina that can be done right away and wouldn’t cost a lot?
  • What changes would you make in the long term that would have the biggest impact?
  • How would you like to be involved?

From the feedback received, we developed the Medina Place Plan, focusing on the neighbourhood centre including both sides of Pace Road Shops, Medina Green and Medina Hall. As well as providing a snapshot of the unique character of Medina, the document sets out guiding principles for working together, and a unique action plan for activating the area over the next 18 months.

We are currently working to implement the ideas and actions set out in The Plan. If you would like to get involved, are interested in knowing more or would like to chat about your ideas for Medina, we would love to hear from you!

    Thanks for contributing to the Medina Place Plan engagement – we really appreciate it! We have had such a great response with over surveys completed. Many of these were on line but the majority were done face to face. We’re taking this opportunity to loop back and let you know what we’ve been up to, what came out of the community engagement and to touch base and get your feedback before we move onto the next stage of the place plan process.

    To this end, we have made a copy of the Draft Medina Place Plan available online for your consideration. It’s worth noting that The Plan has not yet been endorsed by the City, as we are eager to hear the thoughts and feedback of community members such as yourself first.

    What are we doing?

    We’re working with the Medina community to help create and support great public places. The Medina Place Plan outlines a proposal of how we can work together to achieve the collective aspirations of the community and the City. This proposal is supported by an action plan to guide the next 18 months and assist us in working together to develop a shared future vision for Medina and longer-term improvements.

    What have we done?

    The plan is a summary of the knowledge we have gathered about Medina over the past 18 months. During this time, we worked to get to know Medina, its people and stories via a series of community engagement activities including:

    • Place Postcards were hand delivered by the Place Team to over 500 houses within a 500m (approx.) radius of the Medina Pace Road Shops and e-distribution through the Medina Primary School and Resident Group.
    • Place survey – both online and face to face with a total of xx responses
    • Numerous one-on-one interviews with local businesses in the Pace Road Shopping Centre. While this stage of data collection was impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, we have continued to develop our relationship with local businesses and support them via initiatives such as the City’s Stay Loyal Shop Local campaign and the Local Commercial Support Grants;
    • Place Audits with Local Community Groups (prior to social distancing restrictions prevented further such gatherings);
    • In-place engagement activities including:
    1. Clean Up and Family Day – over 200 people
    2. Movie Night on the Green - over 200 people enjoyed the outdoor theatre

    We’d love to hear what you think!

    Unfortunately, our Key Visioning Event was cancelled due to COVID-19. For this reason, the Place Plan (link above) does not contain a shared vision as originally intended. Instead, it includes a set of four guiding principles and an Action Plan derived from the information collected via the above engagement activities.

    We would love to hear your feedback, particularly regarding these guiding principles and the Action Plan:

    1. What do you think about the Action Plan and the range and type of actions included?
    2. Do the guiding principles reflect what you want from your community?
    3. What have we missed?
    4. Do you have any other feedback?

    Be sure to let us know if you would like to be more involved in the future or if you would be interested in being part of making any of these changes happen.

    Where to from here?

    We will be taking the Medina Place Plan to the Council meeting on 28 October 2020. To this end, we would appreciate any comments by 3 September 2020 to enable us to collate the feedback received and incorporate it into The Plan. Once formally endorsed by the City we will continue to work with the Medina community to collectively deliver the actions. The Place Audits will continue throughout the life of the Place Plan and will be used to measure and track the progress of the area over time.

    If you’d like to chat further or are eager to be involved, please contact the Place Team (our contact details are in the Who's Listening section). We can meet at the Green Barista for a catch up, between 9.00am - 5.00pm, alternatively, flick us an email or give us a buzz to arrange a time that suits you.

    Medina Green came alive with festoon lighting, local music, bean bags and picnic rugs to make a fantastic outdoor movie theatre for the night. Over 200 local families and friends relaxed on bean bags and picnic rugs to watch the film The Wilderpeople. It was super fun for everyone and it also gave the Place Team an opportunity to talk to locals to hear what they love about Medina, what they want to see short term and long term and getting them to fill out Plan Plan Surveys.

    The Medina Clean-up & Family Day was a huge success with over 200 people enjoying the RSL Market Day with over 30 stalls, bouncy castle, fun games and delicious Pace Road coffee and food. It also showed how working together can achieve so much, with the Medina Residents Group, City Officers, local residents and business owners joining in to clean-up the sheds behind the Pace Road shops. The clean up will now add to the other work that has been done including; upgrading lighting, installing CCTV cameras, locking up the sheds and general clean up.

    On the day the Medina RSL had 17 new members join and the Place Team had over 40 surveys completed which will help build the information for the Action Plan in the Place Plan.

    The 2019 Medina Feast was fabulous! With an incredible Welcome to Country, great entertainment and an abundance of delicious homemade food, it really was a night to remember. The feast is run by the Medina Residents Group as an annual event for the community to come together and celebrate. The Place Team were able to support the Resident Group on the night and also talk to local residents, business owners and local representatives from community organisation's about what they love about Medina and the types of things they would like to work on together, both short term and long term.
