How many car bays will be lost?

This is dependent on which design concept is chosen. The Medina shopping precinct was originally designed as the Kwinana Town Centre and this reflected the high number of parking bays that still exist. In the 70's the shopping precinct was changed to a neighbourhood centre which does not require as much parking.

    Will the trees be damaged?

One of the main reasons that the carpark upgrade is occurring is due to the tree roots needing protection. Each design concept takes into account the need to protect the trees.

What additional benefits could the community expect to see?

The community can expect to see street furniture, accessible footpaths and pram ramps and additional ACROD parking.

What will happen to the RSL Medina Market?

The Market will remain on the Green every Saturday morning.

What other opportunities would the car parks create?

We believe that the benefits and value that a new design for the carpark could add to the community are:

    • New activation spaces to provide opportunities for the markets, event and activities.
    • Cross usage of the activation spaces benefiting traders and local economy.
    • Safer spaces for sitting and moving through.
    • Improve the look and feel and add to the local character of the shopping precinct.
    • Positive social impact through investing in the public open space.
    • Landscape greenery that will improve the character and charm of Medina Shops.

What sort of safety measures would be in place?

The carpark upgrade will address safety issues using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, including eliminating hiding spots and dead-ends, adequate lighting, clear view lines for passive surveillance and encouraging increased community use throughout the day with suitable co-located activation.
