Friday 12 July Round Up - Club Culture and Coaching for Player Retention

Thank you to the clubs that attended our networking evening on Friday, 12 July. Our guest speaker, Paolo Franzoni, discussed club culture, coaching philosophy, and how both can impact player retention.

My key takeaways from the night were that we only have one opportunity to make a great first impression and that the culture and environment you create at the club will reflect its success, not just the flags on the wall. Other discussion points included:

  • The importance of "coaching the coaches" to ensure they can engage with players of varying ability levels.
  • Conducting skills audits at clubs to clearly understand the skills volunteers/members hold and how these can be utilized.
  • Understanding why players return to a club:
    • They enjoyed being there.
    • They felt they were a valued part of the team/club.
    • They had fun.
    • They experienced improvement and some form of success.

If you attended the evening, I would love to hear your feedback and what your main insights from the session were!

Paolo was an inspiring speaker with many years of experience coaching and developing community and professional clubs. If you are looking for a speaker for your club, I highly recommend contacting Paolo. I am more than happy to pass on his contact details if needed.
