Wellard Village 7 Day Makeover
Like a reality show only real! The Wellard Community came together to make over Wellard Village in just 7 days. Real action! Real results!
The City partnered with RAC through its Reconnect WA initiative, to makeover Wellard Village in just 7 days!
The Wellard Community came together to share ideas, vote, plan, and help deliver placemaking projects over seven consecutive days in April 2023. The Wellard Village 7DM also incorporated a youth-specific element, through which local young people were empowered to plan and deliver their own projects.
The whole process was overseen by David Engwicht from Creative Communities International. David is a world renowned placemaker, community activator, and champion of public spaces.

The Place Game is a great (and simple!) tool anyone can use to evaluate public space. The tool was developed by the Project for Public Spaces (PPS), a world-renowned, cross-disciplinary non-profit that shares a passion for public spaces.
The Place Game evaluates the overall performance of a place according to the four key attributes that make great public spaces: Sociability, Uses and Activities, Comfort and Image, and Access and Linkages.
We invited the Wellard Community to meet us onsite to complete a Place Game both before and after the 7DM. Once gathered onsite, and having had the process explained to them, Place Game participants were asked to split into small groups to discuss a series of evaluations and questions while moving about the space in question. They recorded their thoughts and feedback via the form included on the next page.
Following the Place Games these forms were returned to the City, and the results compiled for comparison.

While the 7DM was a revitalisation project, the most positive outcomes included developing new and existing relationships and connections. Working together side-by-side in pursuit of a shared goal significantly strengthened numerous relationships including that between the City and community, the City and other organisations, and between departments internally.
Following the 7DM, the Wellard community was invited to complete a survey regarding their experience:
- 90% said they would participate in an activity like this again
- 87% said it made them feel proud of their local area
- 90% said it made them feel proud of what they achieved
- 87% said it made them feel welcome and included
- 83% said it helped them feel a part of their community.

Community Debrief - UPDATE
Share Community Debrief - UPDATE on Facebook Share Community Debrief - UPDATE on Twitter Share Community Debrief - UPDATE on Linkedin Email Community Debrief - UPDATE linkSince the 7DM in April there’s been a lot going on! On 4 July 2023, the Wellard community came back together for the 7DM Debrief. This was a chance to talk about what’s working and what could be made even better along The Strand.
The primary outcome from the Debrief was the identification of 7 key focus areas:
- Formalise ‘no parking’ areas using linger nodes/infrastructure/landscaping etc.
- Replacing the hired picnic tables under the pergola with more permanent structures/parklets
- Development and maintenance of the wicking beds
- Development and maintenance of The Arcade
- Lighting along The Strand

Activities, events and activations
The ‘next steps’ discussed below do not extend to events/activations. If you’re looking to organise an event or activation, please let us know and we can go from there. -
Quick Repairs
The ‘next steps’ discussed below do not extend to quick repairs as these will be addressed ad hoc as required.
Working Groups
In addition to identifying the above focus areas. Participants nominated working groups to tackle these projects. If you are interested in joining working group, please reach out and we will put you in touch with that project’s Team Leader.
Next Steps
Thanks to the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program the City has secured $50,000 in funding to continue working with the Wellard community in this space. From here the City will support the above project working groups to come together and plan these projects and their budget estimates. The City can provide working groups with the following support: Meeting/workshop facilitation; a space to meet; and a technical team to provide support and guidance (engineers, landscape architects, outdoor crew etc).
Working Groups will pull together a proposal and budget estimate detailing what can be achieved with different levels/amounts of funding. This will then be presented at a workshop where we collectively decide how to allocate the funds.
The City will host the Workshop on Tuesday 5 September 6-8pm at the Wellard Community Centre to allow the community to decide how to allocate the available funds to the identified projects. It is worth noting that the funds do not need to be spent this financial year, and therefore, unspent funds can be retained for future projects.
A full report summarising the evening will can be found here: https://www.lovemykwinana.com/77251/widgets/415115/documents/267305

Place Game – You’re invited THIS WEDNESDAY 17 MAY & THURSDAY 18 MAY
How does The Strand now, compare to The Strand pre-makeover??
To answer this, the City is hosting a ‘Place Game’ to evaluate the space. If you participated in Day One of the makeover you might remember the questionnaire we filled out during the walk with David – we will be repeating that same process, just post-makeover!
Please join us from 5:30pm at the Wellard Community Centre, Wednesday 17 May. The Place Game takes just 30mins and there will be FREE pizza at The Well afterwards to say thanks!
For those unable to make the Wednesday Session, there will be a second Place Game starting midday Thursday 18 May at the Wellard Community Centre.
