For an update and the proposed Pump Track Design please see the latest News Feed Tab below.

Background:

A group of Wandi residents recently raised some concerns with the City of Kwinana around the lack of activities or infrastructure for youth in Wandi/Honeywood. The initial request was for a pump track, or similar skate/bike infrastructure, to be built.

There had also been some dirt jumps constructed by young people in a bush area, which the City unfortunately had to clear due to Dieback being prominent in that space.

On Tuesday 29 November, 2022, City staff met with a group of around 20 residents at the Honeywood Oval to discuss ideas about youth activities in the area.

Discussion:

Many great ideas were raised by residents, which have been captured on the ideas board below, be sure to add your ideas too! There were suggestions around pump tracks, skate facilities, dirt jumps, trails etc. and also other sporting equipment like 1-1 basketball courts.

Outcomes:

While it is not possible at this stage to commit to hard infrastructure, the City officers are working with the community on the following:

  • Transport options to attend January 2023 School Holiday Programs at The Edge Skatepark (pick up and drop off, from Honeywood Pavilion, advanced registration is required, more details in the News Feed below).
  • Investigate hosting youth programs in Wandi.
  • Engaging with local youth to identify and explore longer term options for infrastructure in the area.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our pop up session on Wednesday 24 April. The final design was presented at the session - pictured above.

    • The proposed design is intended to establish a suitably high quality beginner level jump track to both integrate with and compliment the existing park facilities at Honeywood Park, Wandi. With a limited budget, the design has been kept intentionally minimal so that the trail finish and overall build quality is achieved.
    • The two jump line with a catch berm will provide beginner and younger riders a good introduction to jumping and allow them to grow in confidence and bike handling skills in a safe setting.
    • The track and batters are to be 100% hard surfaced with either re/brown asphalt or polymer stabilised hard surfacing in order to minimise ongoing maintenance costs and provide longevity.

Works to the irrigation system are currently being attended too. Once these are completed we will be able to engage a contractor to build the jump track.

Calling all young people aged 12-24 years!

Bring your bike & come and join us at Honeywood Oval, Wandi from 3-6pm. Sunday 15 October

We’ve invited the Freestyle Now squad to host a free pop-up BMX/ Mountain Bike airbag jump coaching session. Participants will be able to learn new tricks, gain confidence, get some hints and tips and most of all everyone can have fun! All participants must wear helmets and closed in shoes.

Three Chillis Design will also be on site to chat to everyone about the new track and collect information on the essentials young people want in their jump/pump track (with consideration to budget and location) to make sure it is in line with community expectation.

The coaching session will cover all aspects of the sports, as well as equipment maintenance and personal safety issues. Equipment is checked prior to the participant’s involvement to make sure that it is in a safe condition and minor repairs or adjustments can be made if necessary. We do, however, reserve the right to not permit a participant to attend the workshop if we feel that their equipment does not meet safety requirements. All participants must wear helmets and closed in shoes.

Call 9236 4550 or email us for more information about the BMX + MTB Session.

The City now has a budget of $60,000 to build a Jump/Pump Track and have started Stage 1 of the process by engaging Three Chillis (Mountain Bike specialists) to engage with young people in the local area and draw up the concept design. The concept design will then inform Stage 2 - Jump/Pump Track Build.

We are organising a BMX & MTB Coaching Session, 3pm – 6pm Sunday, 15 October at Honeywood Oval. Freestyle Now will set up their mobile airbag jump and be on hand to teach skills. A flyer will be ready mid next week to share with all the information. While the event is on, the Three Chillis crew will talk to everyone and collect information on the elements young people want in their jump/pump track (with consideration to budget and location).
