Sandringham Park Upgrade

Sandringham Park is getting an upgrade and the playground equipment is being replaced. We do have an urgent matter though, and need to pull out the yellow roofed play equipment on Friday, 9 June. The reason is that the soft fall is breaking down and is no longer safe. The other play equipment station will be left for children to play on until we have completed the community engagement and are ready to install all the new equipment.

The Basket Swing will be staying. Sadly though, the Basket Swing has been stolen and is currently out of action. An order has been put in to replace the basket and we have been told there is a wait time of up to 12-16 weeks for it to be delivered. As soon as it arrives, we will install it for you.

For us to make sure we get the best outcome for the park, we would like to chat to you about how you use the park and hear your ideas for the type of playground equipment to replace the current ones. We have two ways to collect your feedback; an online survey which you can find under the Tools bar below and three Pop Up engagement sessions in June:

Pop Up engagement sessions -

1. Monday 12 June, 3.00pm -5.00pm Big Games, Bubbles, Face Painting, Coffee Van

2. Saturday 17 June, 10.00am -12noon Big Games, Bubbles, Face Painting, Plant a Pot, Coffee Van

3. Tuesday 20 June, 9.30am - 11.30am Craft, Bubbles, Face Painting, Coffee Van

Once we have all your feedback from the survey and pop up sessions, our inhouse Landscape Architect will draw up the concept design plan. We will then loop back to you by having another pop up session in the park and by email to see if we have captured everything before the final design is completed.

As a local neighborhood park, we have an allocated budget and need to stay within this, so things like toilets and adventure elements will be out of reach. However, we do have enough funds to add value to your local park by replacing existing play equipment to make it relevant, fun and safe.

NOTE - The Survey has now closed. Please see the responses from the survey in the News Feed below. If you have any ideas or questions please contact Jenny (contact details are in the right hand column under 'Whos Listening '

We would like to invite you to our Sandringham Park pop-up event on Thursday, 29 February, 4.00pm - 6.00pm, to view the park upgrade design. The design has taken longer than expected and we thank you for your patience. The reason for the delay is that in the initial community consultation many people asked for a basketball half court. City officers knocked on doors and chatted to people living closest to the park (within 100m radius of the proposed location) to establish if a court would be complimentary to the area. Noise complaints can be high in areas with basketball courts, and we had to ensure residents did not lose their peaceful lifestyle. As there was concern on the noise level with the bounce of the balls, we have withdrawn the basketball half court from the design and replaced it with equipment for ages 12 years and up.

Please join us at the pop-up event for a free sausage sizzle, ice-cream and big bubbles activity. Officers will be on hand to discuss the design upgrade and updated timeline for completion of the work.

Again, we thank you for your valuable input into the design and for your patience. We look forward to seeing you at the park, if you cannot make it and would like further information, you are welcome to contact Jenny (details in the right-hand column).

Earlier in the year you spent some time providing us with your online and onsite feedback about Sandringham Park.

Your feedback will improve how we deliver this project to make sure it is in line with community expectation.

The things that you told us that were important to you were:

    • Play Equipment - install equipment for the 3 age groups (U 5's, 6 -12, 13 - 18 years). Include nature & sand play, monkey bars or climbing frames, rockers, big slide
    • Basketball Half Court - like the one at Ascot Park
    • Skating Elements - like the one at Ascot Park
    • Bike/Scooter Elements - Rainbow tunnel (to ride through), Stop and Give Way signs, Race Track, Pit Stop, Bike Toolkit Station
    • Swings - Toddler and Mother & Baby Swing
    • Fitness Equipment - on the path from the Kwinana Train Station to the park
    • Picnic Area - Shelter over a picnic table, long picnic table (not metal)
    • Open Space - leave an area to kick the footy, soccer ball (where the rockers are at the moment)
    • Toilets
    • 3 Phase Power for events
    • Signs - New naming sign for the park, interpretive art on the footpath, distance markers, ETA's, map of park and links to nearby parks
    • Drink Fountain - existing one needs some love and add a dog water bowl
    • Broken lights - these will be replaced with proper lights as part of the upgrade

    Other things that came up:

    • Flame Trees - why are they dying and how will we save the Flame Trees that are left. In response to this question our City Tree Officer, in our Parks Operations Team, has checked the trees and a new schedule made for them. The trees have been given nutrients, had the surrounding soil PH adjusted and will have the dead wood cut out of them once they are out of their dormant stage. They will be closely monitored to ensure they are recovering. If you have any further concerns, please let Jenny know and she will pass this on to our Parks Team
    • Pavers - need levelling. City operations will put this in their maintenance schedule
    • Bollards - repair the bollards and fence at the top steps (Dunrobin end)
    • Limestone Piers - repoint
    • Retic Box - This has been disconnected as this in a space for natives and they are now established. The City's Parks Team are checking on the Retic Box and updating me on its use as it had been vandalised in the past.
    • Seat - the stop/rest seat was taken out from the Dunrobin entrance of the park years ago. Could we have it replaced

    What Now:

We are drawing up the concept plan for the park and hope to have this to you by early December. As we said during the engagement, we do have budget constraints, so the request for the toilets is not possible. The amount for a toilet block far exceeds the actual budget that we have for the project.

Please 'follow' this project on Love My Kwinana to receive automatic updates.
