Ascot Park in Bertram is getting a makeover and we want to hear your thoughts on what would make this a great park.

Each year, as part of the City’s Parks Renewal and Upgrade Strategy a suitable park receives an upgrade through the Parks for People Project, with a total budget of $145,000. This year, it's Ascot Park’s turn!

Feedback from our events

From September to November 2020 we spoke with more than 130 people who use the space, live nearby or have a connection with Ascot Park (please see project updates for more info.) We asked how Ascot Park was used and what would make the park more comfortable, usable and a more attractive place to spend time. Your comments inspired the concept design which is available to view at the Bertram Community Centre (9am – 12noon, Monday – Saturday) or which can be downloaded from the Document Section on this page.

A second round of consultation was held September, 2021 for the beginner skate area. This had been identified as a priority in the initial consultation. Specialist business, Skate Sculpture, was engaged to work with the City to design the skating elements. The team from Skate Sculpture met onsite with skaters and community at the Ascot Park Pop Up, Saturday 18 September, to talk with local skaters on what elements they would like to see in the small skate area of the park upgrade.

A car crashed through the limestone wall at Ascot Park in 2021. We took the opportunity at the Park Pop Up to ask you if the wall should be rebuilt or pulled down. The majority of community who responded to the survey asked for the wall to be rebuilt as it will increase safety for children playing at the playground and provide an opportunity to place a "Welcome to Bertram" sign.

The wall will be rebuilt by 30 May 2022.

Local artist Luke and his friends did an impromptu design on the wall as part of the Park Pop Up Day. It is in chalk paint and can be removed at any-time. It was such a hit that they have been invited to a series of Youth Art Workshops at the Bertram Community Centre to work on designs for the Water Corporation to paint the Storage Container at Orelia Primary School. So many of the designs created are amazing, so we have asked them to paint 2 of these on the parks walls in May.

Ascot Park Pop Up - On Saturday 18 September, skaters and community members came together to discuss the skating elements people wanted to see in the design of the small skating area as part of the Park Upgrade. Lots of great feedback was collected to inform the type and placement of skating elements for the small beginner skate area.

Mat from Skate Sculpture, the organisation completing the design and build of the skate area, had images of 12 different types of elements that could be included in the design. It was up to riders to select their 3 favourite elements from - Flat Rail, Flat Edge, Manual Pad, Wallie, Spine, Slappy Bank, Street Humps, Hip, Wedge, Flow Humps, Quarter Pip and Bank. Riders also had the chance to plot where they felt each element would be best placed in the space.

The Ascot Park Upgrade design can be viewed at the Bertram Community Centre (9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday) or downloaded from the Document Section on this page. The skating element design will be completed by February 2022.

The feedback received from Phase 1 inspired the concept design which is currently available to view at the Bertram Community Centre (9.00am-12noon, Monday - Saturday) or which can be downloaded from the document section of this page.

Phase 1 and an assessment inspection revealed the existing play equipment was safe, functional and utilised on a daily basis and is not scheduled for replacement until 2025. The savings from retaining the existing play equipment has allowed additional requested equipment to be added to the draft concept design.

A pop up park event was held at Ascot Park, Saturday 28 November, for community members to view the draft concept design and provide an opportunity to discuss, ask questions, prioritise and put forward anything that may have been missed.

The City's officers visited Bertram Primary School in November to share the draft concept design with the Year 6 class and to hear the children's thoughts, ideas and gaps in the design. The draft concept design was viewed positively by the class with the following ideas suggested to be added:

    • Netball hoop added to the half court area
    • Skateboard/scooter elements - the class also asked to review the detailed design before it was finalised for construction.
